January, Observed

January in Lake Como arrived quietly.

No snow, no urgency — just light easing across the water and the city moving at its own deliberate pace.

From inside, the day began at a distance. Curtains half-drawn, a lamp still lit, the lake already awake but unhurried.

Outside, benches remained empty, the shoreline holding its shape against the slow rhythm of winter.

The city held in soft winter light. Boats stayed covered, their outlines softened by stillness.

Reflections shifted gently through the hours, warm against the muted tones of an Italian January. Birds stayed low, skimming the surface as if reluctant to leave.

Mornings and afternoons shared the same muted tone, as if the day refused clear divisions. Even colour seemed to soften — greens, blues, stone — held briefly by light before slipping back into neutrality.

People passed briefly through the frame — present, then gone — leaving no trace behind. Nothing asked to be resolved; nothing needed to be held.

It was a moment of observation rather than arrival. A pause between elsewhere and whatever comes next.
